It was about 3 years ago (2013) that I (Philip founder of The Lean Bean) became interested in health and fitness and it was really through fitness and surrounding myself with like-minded people that I started to eat healthier and began to become aware of the benefits of eating healthy.

I was working in Dublin city centre at the time when I became frustrated with the lack of options of healthy alternatives, predominantly lunch. Over time as I became more engrossed in the industry I saw an opportunity to provide this option. Since then I have continued educating myself on the topic of nutrition which has proven to be never ending and can be very misleading.

When I started making what I thought were healthy conscious decisions I would choose cereal bars, flap jacks, low fat products, or similar that were marketed as being “the healthy option”. It was only later that I learned these were in fact far from the healthy choice. This really frustrated me as I was now trying to make changes to eat healthier and was becoming more confused about what I should and should not eat. As time went on you could see new businesses starting up and targeting this market. I think this is just the start of a new era of eating healthy and not just a fad as people are becoming more aware of what is in their food.

We as a society have been victim to mass marketing by so many large companies who have influenced us into thinking a product does one thing when in fact is doing the complete opposite, take low fat products as an example. When they take essential and nutritious fat from a product not only have they removed a large amount of the nutritional value but they generally replace it with some form of sugar or harmful chemical which has horrific consequences on our body.

The worst part of it is people are trying to eat healthier but misleading marketing has influenced people into buying products that are actually full of harmful addictive ingredients which diminish the nutrient value.

Here at the Lean Bean we want to bridge this gap by providing real information to our customers so that people can make informed decisions about what they are putting into their body. We also believe that everyone once in a while should indulge in the guilty pleasures of life but do so knowingly. That is our mission and to provide a warm and happy experience for our customers while they enjoy our product.

We have teamed together with Nutritionist ‘Erika Doolan’ to provide our education hub that you can see throughout our store when you visit us, on our website, and social media, which we update regularly with new information. Erika also worked with us and continues to do so in the design of our menu.

She is also a fitness coach and health & lifestyle writer who began her research in Nutrition and fitness back in 2003 as a result of her own medical conditions.
